Occult Authority

In a nutshell, these guys rule the world. A coalition of the most powerful 'mancers in the world, tired of their occult powers being used in the shadows and fringes of society decided to come out in force and use their magick openly to gain a position of power. One of their original members is suspected to have been a Cliomancer, given the way world events led to them taking over. America, China, Russia, India, Iran, Syria. All armed with nukes, all at one another's throats, and a global population so desperate for survival that it would cling to the first hope that came their way. In hindsight, they'd have been better served by the nukes. One by one, the world's governments lay down arms and the Occult Authority stepped in. OA's numbers swelled from the original four to as many as five hundred. No exact figures are known, and the number changes as members are burned out, chosen, or killed.

Life under the Authority is hard and oppressive, normal humans treated as a lower class to magick users, but both subjected to a complete loss of privacy by the OA, fearing an insurrection. Social commentators have previously likened it to life in Soviet Russia, but these writers were either silenced or forced to change tack and write propaganda pieces instead. This stands as the complete opposite of the Corax-ruled Great Britain, in which you are as free as you have ever been, so long as you forgo any magick. During the OA's takeover bid, an epideromancer, Jan Majer, was sent to England, to invite Corax to join them, or to kill him and steal his country. For his troubles, Jan was beaten, killed, and had his heart and eyes eaten. No member of the Occult Authority has ever dared set foot in the country since, but should Corax decide to cross his boundaries then there's no doubt that he would be murdered, and the last free country on the planet would fall.

Corax

Otherwise known as the 'Raven King', Corax reigns as the King of England. He rules in the same way as we know the current English monarchy to rule, with the majority of power resting in a human parliament that runs without regal interference. The only law he has personally decreed is the law banning any unauthorised magick.

No-one is sure of the extent of Corax's powers. It's known for certain that he can speak to and control ravens, crows and wolves; he can also control the earth itself, although it's again unknown how far this stretches. It was reported by witnesses that after Corax fought and defeated a member of the Occult Authority, he ate both the heart and eyes of his fallen opponent. Certain scholars posit these actions are to steal the dead person's memories. Another rumour is that Corax and England are intertwined, that while he remains he is undefeatable, but that both England and Corax will fade if seperated. This has been discounted as propaganda spread by the government to ease the minds of it's citizens. One of the less believable rumours is that Corax is, in fact, a raven that learned magick and built itself a human body. Since no animals have ever been seen displaying any affinity for magick, this seems unlikely at best.

MCID

Stands for Magickal Crimes Investigation Division. They are tasked with uncovering any magick users working in Britain and bringing them to justice. Justice in this case normally taking the form of permanent disappearance.

The division is based in London but significant units are placed in Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester, Hull, Newcastle, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Fife.

The most well-known is the main unit in London, what with London having the most magickal crimes per capita than anywhere else in the UK. This unit is headed by Ray Daniels, famous among the division for his near perfect case record, and having personally caught both 'The Man With No Name' and 'Medusa'.

Great Britain

Encompasses England, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man. Northern Ireland was reunited with Eire, just in time to be annexed by France.

Great Britain is one of the world's only landmasses not ruled over by the Occult Authority, being instead under the control of Corax[link], the Raven King. The country itself still runs as it always has, with the King being seen only at official ceremonies like the creation and dissolution of parliament (which still handles the majority of actually running the country). The laws remain much the same as they are in our world, with the exception of a blanket ban on any and all magick not authorised by the King himself. The MCID was set up for the sole purpose of enforcing this law.

Most people in the country itself are aware of magick, but in the same way they're aware of famine in third world countries. It's something that appears on television and they've never had to deal with directly.

Witness Statement: Alice Marie

It's never been easy being a homicide cop in London. Urban sprawl like this brings a lot of crazy with it; tourists too stupid to just hand over their wallets at the first flash of a gun, violent husbands going one step too far and discovering how it feels to have a knife in their stomach, drug dealers moving into someone else's patch. All that crap ends up on my desk. Couple of years go past and you get used to it, your mind callouses to all the blood and shit covering your murder scene, the smell doesn't get to you so much anymore. I've seen body parts hacked off and put just about everywhere. But walking into a scene where the head is nailed to the wall and it's still speaking. I mean, Jesus fucking Christ, it knew my fucking name. Nobody should have to deal with that. Us normals, we hand that kind of case straight over to Daniels and his MCID. Whoever found it gets a week paid vacation, enough time to forget we ever saw it. Shit, how do you forget something like that?
